For more than three decades, August Ragone has been a writer and commentator on Japanese pop culture, with a special focus on fantasy films and television series, penning for Japanese Fantasy Film Journal, Otaku USA, Video Watchdog, and Famous Monsters of Filmland, among others. As a teen, the San Francisco native was Bob Wilkins’ “Japanese Film & Godzilla Expert” for the Creature Features and Captain Cosmic programs on KTVU-2.
Author of Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters (Chronicle Books), Ragone is a two-time Rondo Classic Horror Film Award recipient, has lectured at Lucasfilm, the Pacific Film Archive, Portland Art Museum, and the Virginia Film Festival, as well as sf, comic book and anime conventions around the country. As an events producer, he created the first anime event held outside of Japan, as well as “Incredibly Strange Wrestling”, “Godzillafest”, “The Greaseball”, and “Shock It To Me!”.
Ragone has also provided special features content for over twenty DVD releases, edited scores of subtitle scripts, and recently has become the host of Shout Factory TV’s “Kaiju Movie Marathon” and “Super Sentai Spectacular” streaming broadcasts.
And he’s not done yet.
